Rules of playing in the poker tournaments vary. However, to ensure fair play and check chances of fraudulent practices when a player plays too many hands at a particular table, most poker tournaments employ a rotational policy. So, players are swapped across one play table to another so that ultimately the number of players at a particular game table stays fixed. As players get eliminated and the field of play gets narrowed down, entire gaming tables are taken out of play. In some poker tournaments, where there are playing rounds, the winner or sometimes the last two or more poker players at table one goes on to play at table two in the next round and so on.

The ranks accorded to the poker players in a tournament follows reverse order and the winner is the player who remains to the very end of the game. This system allows no chance of a tie for the top prize and except in some informal tournaments, where players can end the competition by mutual consent, in all major poker tournaments play ends only with the emergence of one player possessing all the possible poker chips. In the tournaments, where there is the provision of withdrawal by consent, the last players who remain, instead of risking their winning till the ultimate champion is decided, mutually agree to end the game. They either share the pot according to the proportionate value of their chip stock or by any other agreed term.

Barring the cost of running the tournament, all the dough that is collected as net amount received in the form of buy-ins, constitute the winning prizes. In case of freeroll poker tournaments without a system of buy-in, external funds are used to constitute the pot money that comes from either revenue earned from sponsor deals and/or from the cash charged for entry of spectators.

A poker tournament is one where the winner is adjudged from a host of contenders through a game of poker, especially of a particular variant. With increasing popularity of the game of poker among professional gamblers, veteran players and also rookies, introduction of a tournament has taken this game to a very high status of acceptability and recognition. Moreover, the huge amount of money to be won is an added incentive for poker players around the world to throw their hats in the ring for the prize. Started in 1970, World Series of Poker has shown the way to numerous other poker tournaments that are played nowadays all over the world by enthusiastic gamblers.

Anyone who wishes to join a poker tournament has first to enlist his name by paying an amount called buy-in which enables him to get an initial set of poker chips. Some tournaments, however, require the participants to pay an extra amount or a percentage of the buy-in is deducted as tournament running cost. Unlike informal poker games, where cash is often directly used as a gambling stake, in all poker tournaments, games are played only with poker chips and how much poker chips a player is entitled to depend on how much the buy-in amount was paid. According to the rules and regulations of some poker tournament sometimes there is an option called buy-back for players who have either lost their chips in play or are running short of their stock of chips. When a poker tournament allows all players to make use of the buy-back option, it is the add-on facility, something which is not followed by all poker tournaments. In those tournaments which has this buy-back option, any gambler who has already made maximum use of this poker chips stock refilling system or exhausted his initial stock and gone bankrupt after deciding not to exercise the buy-back option, crashes out of the competition.

Special or freak hands in poker games are recognized and allowed by many houses although the official poker hand rules don’t accept them as standard. Among several such special hands, one is the wrap-around straight hand where the player has an ace card of either high or low value among the consecutive cards in his hand. A flash hand consists of four different cards, each representing different suits, and a joker card, while a hand of only jack, queen or king cards is a blazer hand. When all five cards are of same color, then it is a russ hand and holding a flush house means having two different suit of cards, in three and two distribution. When a player has four cards of same suit, it is bobtail flush or bobtail straight if the cards are in sequence.

Some poker games are played with truncated decks making flush a better hand than a full house. For example, Mexican stud has no 8, 9 or 10 cards whereas the Australian version of manila poker has only 32 playing cards with no cards of rank 6,5,4,3 or 2.

Cats and dogs consists of three ‘kicker’ cards, and the ‘cat’ and ‘dog’ standing for no-pair hands of highest and lowest value. So a hand with a 7 card as high and a 2 card as low is the little dog hand; when an ace is the highest and a 9 card us the lowest, it is a big dog; for little cat hand, the high is an 8 card and low is a 3 card; and when a king is the highest and an 8 card lowest, it is a big cat. The hierarchy of cat and dog hands is little dog, big dog, little cat and big cat in ascending order of ranking. Sometimes a hand of big cat flush is considered the best possible hand. Often when the house allows cats and dogs, no other freak hands are permitted in play.

Poker is such a popular gambling game and has so many variations that apart from official rules to determine hands and combinations, some unofficial rules have also become an important part of the game. Such unofficial rules are only followed by the house or casino where the game is being played and are mostly related to use of wildcards or bugs. Such hand rules, which are not accepted as part of standard gameplay, are also called special or freak hands. Since there are no set regulations to make the rules followed universally, they may vary from one house to another and need to be known by the gamblers before applying them in a game.

One such freak hand rule is the five of a kind where by using a wildcard or several wildcards or because multiple decks of cards are used in the game, a person may have five cards of same rank in his hand. If some one has four consecutive cards of the same suit, such as a diamond 10, jack, queen and king cards he is said to have a big bobtail hand and if instead of four, the number of cards is three, then it is the little bobtail hand. A Dutch straight or a kangaroo straight hand means cards are in a sequence but arranged alternately and so it refers to a hand that holds 4,6,8,10 and queen cards. When a player has no pairs but the cards consist of values 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 or 10 then the special hand is called five and dime. Another freak hand is the skeet hand where the player is holding a 10 card, 5 card, 9 card and either a 3 or 4 card as his fourth card and a 6 or 7 or 8 card as his fifth card. When such arrangement of cards happens in a particular suit, the situation is where the player has a skeet flush hand.

Playing a game of poker, someone may often need the high card to win the hand. Actually whenever anyone don’t have the usual card combinations such as Five of a Kind, Straight Flush, Four of a Kind, Full House, Flush, Straight, Three of a Kind, Two Pair or Pair in the 5 cards he is holding, then the cards constitute the high card. When there is a tie between players with various combination hand ranking, then too the concept of high card comes into play. In the high card playing scenario, when the highest value is tied, the second highest is taken into account and so on.

When one has a Flush in hand, he has five cards of the same suit and if he has a Straight, the cards are arranged sequentially. A high straight will have a high ace and four consecutive cards whereas a low straight has a low ace and four preceding cards. Straight hands may not be a wraparound and have a broken sequence, such as queen, king, ace, 2 and 3. In case of a tie between straight hands, the one with the higher value wins, but if more than one player has same value of straight hands, then the pot is split between the players, adjudged as joint winners.

In Three of a Kind combination, with three cards of same rank, the remaining two cards are disparate while in a Two Pairs situation, the players have a distinct fifth card and the other four are in the form of two pairs of same rank. If one has a Pair, then there are three dissimilar cards and one Pair. In each of these cases, the players who have the higher valuation of combination wins, that is anyone with a higher value Three of a Kind or Two Pairs or Pair wins. In case of ties, high card among the dissimilar cards is used to find the winner.
